Me Made May? May I make May mine?

For weeks now I've been agonising over whether to join in on Me Made May 2013. I haven't really sewn too many clothes lately and my wardrobe is actually looking a bit sparse and desperate.

May 5 - Me Made May 2012

These are some of the thoughts that were going through my tiny little brain the last few weeks:

* Perfect! I have about 2 skirts to wear to work, and I'm about to start a new job in a new building where everyone is young and fabulously dressed and this will be a great excuse to get some skirts and dresses suitable for work sewn up!

* Argh! I don't have time! I'm starting a new job and I also just joined the Canberra Quilters committee and my parents are visiting and I have something on, or am away for every weekend between now and June.

* I can do this! And I will even wear a new skirt on my first day at work on the 1st and my first quilt meeting as president on the 2nd and to a 50th wedding anniversary lunch in Brisbane on the 4th and and and ...

* I'm kidding myself. I can't do this. I don't WANT to do this. I've done it the last few years. And doing it in May in Canberra really sucks. And no one needs to see that many cardigans. Or that many different coloured pairs of tights.

May 27 - Me Made May 2012

* You have the most enormous dress fabric stash and you need to start sewing and wearing it!

* No way - you have three quilts to sew by the end of July.

* Some days I just want to wear trousers and I've never made a pair for myself. And I don't intend to either.

So you can see where and how I am conflicted. Even 5 minutes before writing this post I was still trying to decide! I love Me Made months and everything they stand for. I love the sharing and the amazing pieces people sew, and I get so inspired and want to sew all the things. But perhaps I need to stop being so tough on myself.

So this year I won't be taking part in Me Made May. I will still check out the Flickr group every day and cheer everyone on.

But yet I still need to make some clothes for winter, especially work clothes, and reduce my stash.

Stash - half of it

So instead of Me Made May, I think I will instead make the rest of 2013 the year of the dressmaking stash down. It's time.

  1. Don't you hate it when logic wins? Looking forward to seeing what you make anyway :)

    1. I am STILL tormenting myself! Instead of sewing something I am ironing the clothes I have. The sewing can happen tomorrow.

  2. ive just read through the made by me post - you know you dont have to post every day and you can wear stuff you have already made. As I see it you have a heap of stuff that you have made from before - very nice too may I say - so dont stress and see how you go. if you make one or two new skirts for work you are ahead already!

    1. Yes I did consider not posting every day, but in the end I decided that as I would be wearing mostly the old clothes I wore the last few years it would be good to have a year off! I think the Flickr group members will thank me for it!

  3. I agree with you, in late Autumn I'm wearing jeans, tops and cardigans. I have 5 cardigans, so how many times do people want to see them?? March or September were much better months for Tasmania. So I'm not participating either, and I did love joining in. I love your skirts!! Happy new job and happy dressmaking. I am making a dress a month this year. All by myself!! I did two earlier on so I've had this month off.

    1. I have about 18 cardigans! I'm not even kidding! Even I of bored doing the ironing this afternoon. I think adding some dresses to my wardrobe will do me the world of good!

Will have to go over to our blog and check out your dresses! I'm looking for inspiration.

  4. I don't blame you for giving Me Made May a miss this year, sounds like you have heaps on. Although I did rather enjoy watching your outfits last year.

Pants. Pants are easy once you have the pattern, especially if the fabric has some stretch. I have one good pattern (much altered) that has a close fitting elastic waist band, no zip. They are my favourite work pants and fit me much better than anything I can buy. Maybe pants one day?

    1. The outfits would have been much the same as last year. And I really need to jazzy up my wardrobe a bt! I always worry I look too casual, but I've never been a suit wearing gal.

I had the most perfect pants once - and when they wore out I swore I was oing to replicate the pattern and make myself more pairs. Six years they sat in the ironing basket waiting for me to do something with them, and eventually last summer I threw them out in a fit of decluttering madness. I really regret that now!

  5. I'm not doing it. I mostly wear me-made stuff, but not always. And I don't want to stress myself out on the days when I would have worn not-me-made by forcing myself to find an alternative. Maybe I should still take note though of what I wear each day - because five days out of seven most of my outfit would be me-made. I think. By the way, I love those skirts - and best wishes for the new job!

    1. I wear mostly me made too - but some days I just want to wear something entirely store bought! And it was the time factor and not wanting to get stressed over CLOTHES that brought me to my decision. I look forward to watching from the sidelines.

  6. I feel for you! it's fun to be a part of things, but it sounds like you have so many other things to think about that this wouldn't end up being be fun. Glad to hear you'll be checking in on the participants tho, that will be fun and stress free. you may even get ideas for your stash!

    1. I think seeing what others are doing has always been more fun for me than photographing what I wear each day! Are you participating? I look forward to seeing what you get up to!

  7. Decisions, decisions, decisions! The stress is on...love your fabric stash...I had the multicoloured fabric (2nd down on right) and made a great skirt out of it. It has a lovely stretch to it and stands up well to washing...looking forward to your sewing months ahead...J

  8. Oh I was wondering whether you were playing along this year! One of these days I'm hoping to have enough Me Made things in my wardrobe to join in.

  9. Oh, I was hoping that you might join in again this year, but completely understand. Sounds like we might need to keep you honest with your dress making stash busting! I hope you make something out of that chevron cord from your instagram photo soon.

  11. There are never too many cardigans and coloured tights in the world...and where is this building where everyone is young and fabulously dressed? You sound like me putting on make up on the days I have to meet with our marketing girls...
