When "mark all read" is not the only option

Rose

I currently have 295 unread blog posts in Google reader. By the time I log on again tomorrow night I will most likely have 350 unread posts.

Having so many unread posts fills me with a dread not unlike having an unfinished and overdue project at work, or an appointment you've forgotten about until it's too late. Most of the time I cut my losses and clear my conscience and mark all the posts as read, but this time I'm going to make more of an effort.

I'm going to try and leave a comment on at least one post from each blog that I haven't read. I figure that I love getting comments, so I'm sure the other bloggers appreciate comments too. And with a blog reader, you can get so lazy with not leaving comments.

Reckon I can do it? What do you do about your unread blog posts?

Etsy was down for a few hours tonight, but I have just managed to load four box bags and a sunnyboy before I turned into a pumpkin. I love this kind of sewing - no pressure, no stress, and I know the pattern well enough by now that I don't have to think too much about how it's coming together. Well, you'd hope I'd know the patterns well, since I wrote them.

  1. Well of course they were squirrels, now I look closely. What cute fabrics you manage to source.

  2. i try and keep on top of it every day if I can - even just half an hour helps. And when it all builds up, I skim and only read the posts that really catch my eye. My list is huge.

  3. Well done - making more comments was one of my new year's resolutions, which I didn't do very well at really. Must try, try again!

  4. I hate missing out and so I always read all my blogposts in googlereader - but of course it means I don't do other things (like knitting!!). I have my usual blogs that I comment on every (or almost every) post, those that I occassionally comment on, and those that I never comment on, and I pretty much stick to that. But of course, I have the luxury of lots of time, which makes it much easier!

  5. If I'm that far behind, I just read them really quickly in Google Reader without commenting... and then get back to my normal commenting routine the next day.

  6. Ugh! I hear you loud and clear!

The last time I read someone else's blog would have to be at least 2 months ago. I used to be so vigilant in my dedication to my blogland friends. You are sooo right though... we love hearing from others... and they don't seemt o be having any trouble visiting us... so what is the problem? Speaking for myself... I blame Facebook, kids sports, neverending housework... but definitely not myself! lol

ps. I missed you too! xox

  7. Google Reader is my friend. I figure if I can't get to them today then maybe tomorrow. When they pile up, I read the top of the top in their entirety then start skimming the rest. Sometimes I leave the ones at the bottom for a while and then read a whole stack of them in one go, depends on how prolific the blogger is!

  8. I'm a reader, which makes me feel like a taker. AND I need to be more of a giver, and leave this comment.

  9. I think it is a noble plan - good luck

  10. I recently cut google reader out of my life. It was the best thing I ever did. I was feeling exactly like you are with posts piling up and no time to catch up.

I updated my blog sidebar with all the blogs that I love and when I have time I just click on links here and there. No pressure, no stress. I'll just keep adding to my sidebar list as I come across new blogs that I like.

I'm telling you. Google Reader is a frienemy.

  11. I don't have a reader, just a mental list of blogs that I visit regularly. I suspect that if I did, I'd feel overwhelmed by unread posts too.

Irrespective of whether it's blog posts, craft projects or anything else, sometimes it's just best to clear the decks and start afresh.

  12. I've got well over 200 unreads already from all I've subscribed to from the SMS giveaway (good way to find new blogs! ... found yours that way!) -- I tend to leave them unread (not just new blogs -- also when I go away on a trip or something and have hundreds pile up) and just read the new posts until I find time to go back and read the old ones ... leftover time on lunch break at work is a popular time!

  14. I just follow profligately and don't sweat it when posts drop off the bottom. Then again, I'm not finding it easy to make internet friends these days . . . maybe I should be more careful?

  15. i dont use a blog reader. i just make a point of checking out my friends blogs, and whenever someone reads my blog and leaves a comment i hop over to their blog and catch up on posts and comment. it works for me!
