My creative space this week takes me outside where I'm painting the Hardiplanked section of the front of our house. It was originally a lichen green, and before that brick red. For the last year it's had a myriad of blue and grey sample pots smeared on it, as we tried to decide on colours, and then procrastinated a lot. It all made our house look a bit avante garde and, well, silly. It's made me so happy to get rid of all the ghastly colours with a fresh coat of this colour.
House painting and I have a funny relationship. I'm not a fan of the cleaning and taping and preparation, but give me a paint brush and a pot of paint and I'm the happiest, dirtiest clam there is. I love how a lick of paint can transform the dingiest, darkest room, and I don't even begrudge the sore muscles I get from climbing up and down the ladder.
This morning was going to be spent applying the second coat so I could say "DONE!!!" but it started raining early, and I have a shocking bout of hayfever. Good excuse to do some sewing, I think.

What a great color....Painting is always great therapy for me too!!
ReplyDeleteI so absolutely agree with you about the preparations for painting- I found that so boring and tedious- but I did enjoy the actual painting of my studio- of course at the end I was so tired I left the next project to do... a couple of months later!
ReplyDeletegood luck with it all,
Annamaria
well, i'm not sure i know what avant garde means (;o)) but i think it is going to look FABULOUS! when you're done!! =)
ReplyDeleteNice colour - and I saw your name in Connecting Threads today - looks like a great gallery :)
ReplyDeleteI loved reading your post Michelle. I loved the way you described your house, the process and how you feel about it all. And I loved your excuse to sew today!!!
ReplyDeleteIts not raining now! Tee Hee but it is not a nice day when compared the the lovely weather we have had the last two. The Colour you are painting looks great I can imagine it in our light and would be a nice backing to foliage. Happy sewing!
ReplyDeleteI agree that there is something deeply satisfying about applying a lick of paint. It's so nice to be able to appreciate the fruits of your labours (before you go and soak in a hot tub).
ReplyDeleteOur lounge room is still very avant garde with sample squares. Hooray for a fresh coat! I love the 9 though :)
ReplyDeletemichelle...iam the same way about prep work ...you will feel so refreshed when it is done...hay fever oh no! sewing oh yes!
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing what a coat of paint can do isn't it! Pity about the weather today but hooray for sewing instead.
ReplyDeleteI loved reading your description of the process. Enjoy the sewing and I hope the painting makes you feel like you have a new house.
ReplyDeleteI've never painted the outside of a house, but I feel the same way about painting interiors. I hate all the prep, but I just love the actual painting. There's something about seeing your own progress as the new color slowly but surely fills up the space....
ReplyDeleteFabulous photo! I love the colour provenance on houses... Also, the layers of wallpaper from decades of papering or ripping up the lino and finding newspaper from 1952... so gorgeous! Good luck with your painting :) K
ReplyDeleteAah, painting. I've got so much to do, but it's so easy to put off, isn't it? Lovely shade of blue you've chosen.
ReplyDeleteHmm, yes, the actual painting bit does sound fun. Perhaps you could get someone else to do the prep...
ReplyDeleteHope you get it finished......great colour, hows the job hunting going?
ReplyDeleteI love the instant reward of reno painting, Its so much fun!!
ReplyDeleteHey, we like that colour at our house too!
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful colour Michelle! Can you post more pics when you've finished? I'd love to see how it looks.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you get so much out of painting houses. I have never been much of a fan but my step dad does it for a living and he gets a lot of enjoyment out of it. Which is a good thing considering it's his day job!
Great colour! Luckt you being able to paint... we rent. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteHello! I am currently painting our new front fence (picket) and the weatherboards on the house, so I can totally relate. Prep sucks (but is worth it) and the pianting is mostly good, except when my hand cramps up! I love the instant gratification of the first coat too! Good luck.
ReplyDeleteoh looking good!, nice paint brush action - I can't wait to see it all done
ReplyDeleteOoo it is going to look great. I love the colour.
ReplyDeleteThat color looks great! It will look fantastic for sure! Please do post a pic when you're done!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your sewing time! :)
That color is perfect...I always have the worst time trying to find the *perfect* color
ReplyDeleteGreat colour. I enjoy painting once I get started too. It's just the thought of all the set-up that puts me off. Good for you, getting in there and getting it done.
ReplyDeleteI agree - hate the preparation but the actual painting is so much fun and so calming too! Love that colour.
ReplyDeletePainting is such an easy way to transform a house isn't it (well, if you ignore the sore muscles etc!)
