My creative space - skirting the issue

My creative space 10 Sept 2009

I used to be a skirt person. When I first started sewing back in the early 90s I used to make my own Chanel-inspired unlined jackets in raw silk linen, and matching printed calf-length skirts with pleats and pockets (pockets were a must-have). Oooh I was the epitome of style, I was.

But tastes change and weight is gained, and damn, Myer put out some nice trousers these days, and before I knew it I was no longer a skirt person. I was a trousers person. I still have one skirt for work in my cupboard - a lovely orange checked felted wool number, but I haven't worn it in years and I really should. It's beautiful.

So the last year I have been contemplating making a skirt (Procrastination is my middle name. Why do you ask?). Surrounded by beautiful fabrics all day, it's hard not to think how I could wear some of them. Last year Lara Cameron printed her houses and bikes fabric. Two of my favourite things on the one fabric? Insane. I bought two big pieces - one brown and one orange - and I have never thought of cutting them up for Sunnyboy Pouches, not once. But I have been dreaming of ways to include the fabric in a skirt. My favourite is the brown one. Would it look best with denim or chocolate linen? Decisions, decisions.

But first a muslin, where I will hopefully be able to add some pockets to the existing pattern.

(My creative space also includes some custom pouches for customers, but you've seen that kind of thing pretty much every week and are probably as bored with that photo as I am).

See Kirsty for more creative spaces.

  4. Oooh decision decisions - I have the same pocket addiciton. I won't wear a skirt unless it has pockets. I've even sewed pockets into the lining of bought skirts just so I can wear them.
That fabric would look gorgeous with linen or denim - can't wait to see what you choose.

  11. Yahoo for you for making something for yourself. I adore denim but the fabric would be a match made in heaven with chocolate linen... but it is a hard decision. Just don't procrastinate on it too long!

  19. LOVE that fabric!

Procrastination is an art form, and a skill to be nurtured. I really wish I could get a qualification in procrastination - I would have a post doctoral degree by now!

  20. I'm glad you aren't making sunnyboys from this lovely fabric - a skirt is a much better use I think (or maybe a frame on the wall - it is such cool fabric!).

I vote for chocolate linen. And pockets of course. I do love a skirt with pockets. Not that I own many, unfortunately!

  21. Deligthful post! It would never occur to me to make a skirt from such daring fabric, and I think it will be brilliant! I can't wait to see it. (And I love pockets in skirts. Thank you, thank you, for a place to store the little thingies I'm always collecting or taking with me.)

  23. I love skirts. Always do, always did. I guess I am a skirt person. And I am glad I am, because I am a bit scared when it comes to sewing trousers :-) Anyway, I think the fabrics you picked will be lovely as a skirt. Can't wait to see the final result!

  25. I love a good skirt. In fact I am a skirt person and not a pants person. The only pants I own are a pair of tracksuit pants!

The fabric is beautiful. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

  26. That's so funny. I'm the opposite. I am a skirt girl. I don't do pants (apart from two exceptions 1 tracksuit pants at the gym (you can't gym in a skirt) and 1 PJs... Serena

  28. I think it would look fabulous with choc linen or denim. I'm pretty much a pants girl except for a denim skirt with footless tights. Can't wait to see the result ~ good luck!
