This is my 690th post. I've been blogging for 8 years and 11 months. Really, there is no milestone to today's giveaway, but I bought two of the same book by accident and it's really too good a book to not give someone else a treat.
The book I speak of is "25 Patchwork Quilt Blocks" by Katy Jones. Do you know Katy? She blogs at I'm a Ginger Monkey, is a co-founder of Fat Quarterly mag, the creator of the scrap vomit, and an all round top sort. I think I might have a teeny crush on her. And she has written a really good book, and I only need one of them.
I love the way Katy has set out this book. The blocks are all 6 inches square, or 8 inches with borders and I could imagine making a really cool little sampler quilt out of these blocks. It would be a great way of increasing your skills at cutting and piecing, and there are even some cool new applique blocks in this book (Moustache, anyone?)
I love the shoo fly block. It's such a simple block, and I made one as a beginner quilter many years ago. Imagine a whole heap of these blocks together in the one quilt though! So effective.
The Contrary Wife block is lovely. It's like a simple Jacob's Ladder. Or not. Anyway, I really like it. Once the show quilts are OVER I am going to make one of these blocks.
And this is probably my favourite in the book - Aircraft. it's like a fancier Birds in the Air block - a block I have always loved but never attempted.
So now for the giveaway. I'm afraid it's for Australians only - sorry! I just don't have the time at the moment to stand in a lengthy post office queue, and Australians always get ripped off when it comes to books on our soil anyway.
If you would like to go in for a chance to win this book, comment below and make sure your email is attached to your profile, or include in the comments so I can contact you if you have won.
Just let me know what your favourite block is - doesn't have to be in this book! And you don't have to have ever made it either.
My favourite block of all time? 54-40 or Fight. Have always loved it, and for some reason it's always scared the wits out of me. Silly I know. I play with it on my iPad quilt apps all the time - I should just knuckle down and do it!
Entries close Monday night 3 June at midnight Canberra time. Good luck!
OOh I'd love to win Katy's book, I haven't had a new patchwork something just for me in forever. Thank you so much for the opportunity to win. xx Janelle
ReplyDeleteDude! I would totally adore this book (but you probably already knew that). My favourite block... it's a hard choice... I love the flying geese blocks (it's on my to make list) - and I love the aircraft version in this book. I'm a sucker for a churn dash... and I just adore the humble log cabin. Really I'm a sucker for most quilt blocks. I do love a simple HST block as well - they're so versatile and effective.
ReplyDeleteI love the block you love... maybe a quiltalong? Hint Hint
Thanks Michelle for 'over purchasing' and giving a copy away. My favourite block? I have two, the Granny Square block and the simple HST Pinwheel. If I had to pick just one, it would be the Pinwheel. So simple but so effective. Starting to really enjoy the Dresden Plate at the moment and love doing hexagons, but the Pinwheel is for me.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 690 blogs; I only discovered you a couple of years ago. I will have to put some time aside from sewing and read some (all) of your older posts.
Here's to another 690+ Cheers, Lisa:)
Thanks for the giveaway Michelle! I love pinwheels. But, I just made a mega star block and I really love how blowing them up changes the perspective. I think a few more mega blocks are in order! Xx
ReplyDeleteI love teensy pieces and hexagons
ReplyDeleteThink the best is TINY hexagons!!
Wow...that is a long time! Congratulation Michelle! Too many blocks to chose from.. but I have always love the churn dash block..
ReplyDeleteCongrats Michelle on 8 years of blogging, wow! Favourite block - bear paw in red and white (I'm colour specific as well
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance Michelle. I've always loved the New York Beauty block - it is such a glamour. Will make a big quilt out of them one day.
ReplyDeleteAlso hopelessly addicted to hexagons :)
Dresden Plates - love, love, love them!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 8 years of blogging. Fantastic milestone.
Congratulations on 8 years of great blogging, Michelle. My favourites would be the Orange Peel and Pinwheel blocks. I might change my mind tomorrow, though :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how the years pass - I'll have to add mine up. I enjoy following your blog and love your wool i ness. My fav block I'm loving at the moment is the snail trails.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win Michelle. I have enjoyed reading your blog for awhile now. Congrats on the milestone no matter what length. I have always loved Storm at Sea block but never made one. My other fave is Lady of the Lake which the Aircraft block reminds me.
ReplyDeleteI don't know f I could possibly pick just one favourite, especially given I'm a fan of modern quilts too! I do like the aircraft block though, very cool! Congrats on your blogging non-milestone, they are some impressive figures!
ReplyDeleteThere is this block that I want to try, but I don't know how to look it up as I have no idea what it is called. Perhaps someone could help? It's made of squares, rectangles and triangles but the way it is laid out it looks as though there are circles in it, depending on the colours and tones used. That's the block I want to try one day.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway opportunity!
I have no idea what my favourite block is ... I'm a complete quilting novice. The scrappy blocks I see around the blogo-sphere are always pretty cool. I like those.
ReplyDeleteWow - you're a super blogger! My favourite block is the New York beauty - and I love most of it's variations. And no, haven't attempted it.
ReplyDeleteWowee!!!! Congratulations on such an epic blogging milestone.
ReplyDeletePlease don't include me in the giveaway as I'd rather a quilter win such a lovely prize, but I just couldn't resist a massive congratulations!
Oooh, a pressie! I'd love this book, and congrats on the 'milestones'. I havent made many actual 'blocks' I dont think, (which is why this books would be handy) but I've made 'Churn Dash' cos I like the name! (I say it with a cowboy accent haha)
ReplyDeleteMy fab block of all time is the pinwheel star. I made my first sampler quilt last year and have been working on a 36 block pin wheel star quilt ever since. I have only 8 blocks left and its a rainy Sunday afternoon here so I'm hoping to get my teeth into it! I love your Instagram photos...am thinking of plans for all my scraps!!!
ReplyDeleteOohhhh how exciting...my first block ever was the Dresden plate...still my favourite block!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great offer, thank you.
ReplyDeleteLots of inspiration for new blocks to try.
My favourite block seems to be the latest one completed, so it changes every week, but I do enjoy stars.
Congratulations on your blog! My favourite would be log cabin. Thanks for a great giveaway.
ReplyDeleteMay I enter from afar but for my aged mama in Victoria? My first block was a maple leaf (bear pawish) thing for a cushion in Yr10 craft. The harrassed teacher didn't stop me from laying the blocks out with one the wtong way around.
ReplyDeletei really enjoy reading your blog - congratulations on the non-milestone and overshopping ;)
ReplyDeletefav block?? maybe ohio star ...
I love a good Bear's Paw block! So many ways to change it around. :)
ReplyDeleteI think I have a crush on Katy too, she is an amazing quilter. Love her work, and I'd love this book :)
ReplyDeleteI love the spider web and orb octogon blocks, they look amazing, and one day I will attempt them, one day.
Hi Michelle - congrat's on the milestone. It looks like a good book, might be tempted to get one myself. My favourite block at the moment is "eight pointed star", but there are so many great ones out there, it's a difficult choice and would probably change ok week to week...
