Quilting by hand

Quilting the wonky quilt

It's been a while since I hand quilted a quilt. But I'd already thread basted the wonky quilt and want to finish it so it can be used. So it was time to get the perle cotton and my thimble out to play.

A lot of the marks I'd made back in August had faded, so I marked them again.

I ended up not using the sashiko needles as they were too hard to "rock" through the quilt. I used some No. 8 Clover needles instead. They are working out really well.

My stitch is not so perfect, but that's good as the quilt isn't perfect either. I've been enjoying the process of stitching all the quilt layers together while watching the tennis on the TV this week. It's soothing and meditative which is just what I've needed lately, and I can't stop. It will be finished in a week, at this rate.

Love your quilting and your Christmas dress. I made one too. The pattern had the best fitting arm-hole ever!
    Thanks for the inspiration:)

  3. Oh goody, I love this quilt! Will be lovely to see it done!

DpWhen you do the basting, do you use the quilting frame, or is the quilt laid flat on the floor and you baste it that way? Or something else? (just wondering!)

  4. I do the basting with the quilt laid on the floor and taped to the carpet. I pin it together first, and then baste with thread. You can't really pin with safety pins and hand quilt - the thread gets caught on the pins, and you certainly wouldn't be able to use a hoop.

The hoop is really just there to keep my layers in check and give me a definable space to quilt in. It's also easier to use my "under" hand which feels for the needle when I'm rocking it through all the layers.

    Hope that makes sense!

  6. It's looking amazing already - can't wait to see it complete! I've enjoyed seeing this quit come together from it's beginnings. I've gone from "they're kind of cool" in response to the blocks to "Wow!" now that I see it nearly finished. I would love your vision!! Anna
