Cold day in the city

Boxes for Socks, originally uploaded by quiltingmick / michelle.

It was an exceptionally cold day in Canberra today - it only got to 4.1 degrees Celsius, and it was the coldest June day time temperature since 1966.

It's just not feasible (or sensible or environmentally or fiscally sound) to keep the central heating on for one person in a four bedroom house during the day, so I switched the heating off, closed the sewing room door, cranked up my little oil heater, tuned the radio to local ABC, and sewed and sewed.

Next on my list is sewing a quilted hot water bottle cover using some pink elephants fabric. I think it's the right weather for thinking about making such a thing, don't you?

But first I'm going to put on every piece of clothing I own and head outside for a walk. Wish me luck that I don't get frostbite or chilblains!

  1. Is it totally selfish not to want to know about such cold. I don't think I have ever lived through such a cold day except at the snow. And I thought it was freezing here at 10C in the evening. Brrrrr!

  3. wow! and I am complaining at the moment on the Gold Coast and our current temperature is only 13 degrees. This has definately put my complaining in perspective.

  4. I love the cold but today was a bit much. I dread to think what our heating bill is going to be - our first winter in this renovater's delight with poor insulation.

  5. I'm dying without my old central heating. I've got the oil heater cranked up in the study so I can read blogs, and another in my bedroom so I can hide in there and watch tv. I was trying really hard to stop those black balloons until this week!
Those socks boxes look so cute all lined up!

  6. BRRRRRR. Next on this crafty agenda is fingerless gloves. I might then have some sort of vague fighting chance to connect brain messages with extremities and get something done!

(see how smoothly that excellent excuse for urgent crafting activity came out?)
